Tucson, AZ area dentist explains when tongue tie treatment may be necessary
By Dr. Jeanne Anne Krizman
When a new mom is experiencing trouble breastfeeding, it may be beneficial to speak to a pediatrician about a condition known as “tongue tie.” Tongue tie is caused by the frenum—an area of skin that may be too tight and can restrict movement of the tongue or the mouth. There is a frenum connected to the upper lip as well as one connected to the tongue, which may prohibit proper suckling.
Symptoms of a tight frenum
It is important for a mother to look for the signs of a tight frenum. The baby may be difficult to feed from breast or bottle. This can be due to a poor latch. The baby may want continuous feedings and may still suffer from poor weight gain and even reflux symptoms. The mother, on the other hand, may notice incomplete breast drainage, plugged ducts, infected nipples, and other issues.
Tongue tie treatment is available with Dr. Jeanne Anne Krizman DMD MPH of Tucson Biological Dentistry. She provides treatment for both the lingual (tongue) and the labial (lip). When restriction is keeping the tongue or the mouth from functioning at its best, it is important to consider the benefits of a frenectomy.
