If you feel that your smile has been holding you back, Dr. Jeanne Krizman in Tucson, AZ has cosmetic dental solutions for you. One of the popular cosmetic treatments in recent years is porcelain veneers. Read on to learn more about how you can get a brilliant smile with natural-looking porcelain veneers.
Porcelain veneers explained
Porcelain veneers have become an increasingly common way to achieve a beautiful, yet natural-looking smile. In fact, you likely see people with veneers on a regular basis and don’t even know it! From home to Hollywood, many people have enjoyed the smile-transforming benefits of veneers.
Veneers are ultra-thin pieces of tooth-colored porcelain that are custom-designed to match your existing smile. They are cemented to the front of teeth to change the appearance of the teeth and hide imperfections such as:
Permanent stains or discolorations
Teeth that have become worn down
Cracks or chips
Gaps between teeth
Mildly crooked teeth
Teeth that seem out of proportion in comparison to your other teeth
Benefits of porcelain veneers for your smile
In addition to providing you with a wonderful smile, which can have a ripple effect on nearly every area of your life, porcelain veneers offer several benefits as a cosmetic dental option:
Veneers are custom designed for your mouth, so they look natural and people will likely not know you have them
Porcelain is a biocompatible material that is well-tolerated by gum tissues, which means a reduced chance of irritation
The shade of porcelain can be adjusted to match your other teeth and it reflects light in a similar way that natural teeth do
Veneers are strong and long-lasting
Porcelain is naturally stain-resistant, so it is less likely than natural teeth to become discolored
Placing veneers requires less shaping and restructuring of teeth than other options such as crowns do
No special care is required to keep your teeth with veneers healthy
The veneer placement process
The first, and perhaps most important, step in transforming your smile with dental veneers is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Krizman. She will ask you about what you like and don’t like about your teeth, what your ideal smile would look like, and what your preferences are in terms of treatment options and budget. She will also perform a thorough examination to make sure that veneers are the best option for you, and to ensure that your mouth is healthy and ready for veneers. For example, if you have active gum disease, Dr. Krizman may recommend a treatment plan for your periodontitis before starting the veneer placement process. She will also answer any questions that you have so you can feel confident in your decision whether to move forward.
Dr. Krizman will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel (approximately half a millimeter) from the surface of the teeth so that the veneers can be placed without looking bulky or sticking out. She will also take dental impressions of your mouth so that your veneers can be designed and fabricated for a perfect fit and a natural look.
Once your veneers are ready—typically a few weeks later—you will come back into the office to try them on for fit and appearance. Dr. Krizman can trim the veneers as needed and adjust the shade of the porcelain until it is just right. When you both agree that the veneers look and fit great, Dr. Krizman will clean, polish, and etch your tooth to enable the bonding agent to work optimally. Then, she will cement the veneer in place and use an ultraviolet light to harden it rapidly. Finally, Dr. Krizman will check your bite and remove any cement, and you are free to go enjoy your new smile!
